One Belt, One Road : Understanding China. Episode 1
##########################################
Mmm.
Hello welcome to understanding china this is the new occasional series that's being developed that think tech hawaii and it's rather unique in that it features people from America speaking with people in china so across the board from business to cultural to education to government will have a series of guests who will speak about subject of understanding China really it could also be called understanding America because this is about a clear dialogue between the the two great countries about our common interests and our common history in our common future so today we have a very special guest for our first program and we're very thankful to j Fidel here at think tank for helping to arrange this.
We have newly whose live from Beijing and its morning time engaging and late afternoon time in Honolulu hello new league and I'll Michael hello welcome newly is the secretary-general of the International ecotect cooperation committee and that's part of the China National Committee for Pacific Economic Corp cooperation so it's a lot of syllables a lot of words it essentially means that newly is part of the effort in China to reach out to the world to understand what China has to contribute and what the world has to give back to China so we're going to engage on a very interesting topic right now that most people in America and really outside of China don't even know but it's a very prominent topic of conversation in China today and that is the Silk Road that's the one rep one belt one Road policy it's really inheriting from history the the silk road and we have we have a map of what the silk road once was that we can show now and it really shows a time in China's history when china was the eastern terminus of the largest international trading network in all history and extended all the way west through to Europe and all the way self into southern asia and north into Russia and it existed for over a thousand years and they call it the silk road because one of the things that was chiefly traded was silk from china but there was a lot more than just silk and there was a lot more than just trading in the background of the of the self road so i wanted to ask newly if you could explain this one belt one Road policy where it came from who introduced it and when ok Michael actually the one Bell wonder of policy and the full name is one Val and One World initiative it was it was a race stuff in yet to some 13 on seventeenth of sep tember one residence you didn't ping visits as a constant and he says speech in one of the University the little idea for these policy is for as a Langley falling China a tradition from ancient times you know the silk road is bring it was bring trading opportunity from china to easton through their the past the world from maryland to the north and the other way around on the ocean in the sauce area so it was calling this trading pass to to be applied in the current in the current economic development mate as China biggie visa contrition long timer to grow a business opportunity together this is that the whole concept right and i think one of the key historic figures that we would recognize around the world is Marco Polo he was an early figure in the trade of the Silk Road and in fact help it help to open up and define some of those roots all the way from China all the way to Italy is that correct yes yes is to this day you can find in a number of cities in china i know in suzhou for example you can find squares and restaurants and the even sculptures of Marco Polo that that memorialized that time.
Yeah you know newly in trying to understand how China Seas and thinks from inside through Chinese eyes I've always found it very interesting to understand the Chinese characters that are used to express an idea so when you look at the chinese characters for one belt one road they break down into different parts right before you get the full idea of one belt one Road what are those parts of the chinese characters that express the idea that give us some insight i think from.
Chinese point of view is doesn't matter of about and roll actually just on one line is a meaning of line and just that we can say one belt and what about or however old r went wrong we just separated as to the north we call one bout to the sauce we call one rolled that is not very much difference is just a line there one from men in the men one from Bahrain line.
Yeah and part of it extends down into Africa right sorry.
The part of it extends down into Africa part of the the southern road goes all the way down into East Africa yes yes so what are the activities that we're that we're seeing come from the one belt one Road it's been practicing they've been building it expressing the idea having conferences signing trade agreements and so on for a number of years.
What are the key activities that are actually taking place right now within this one belt one Road idea so I apologize for the break up there where we have a live Skype connection over the internet between Honolulu in Beijing and sometimes there's a little drop out this is the first time we've done this actual connection but let me repeat my question for newly again.
Newly with the development of the this one Road policy.
What are some of the specific activities and countries where there where that policy is being expressed right now because the policy for the whole idea the whole policy that the g concept is peaceful a development you know there's rumors for internationally flea season say China's region china development that is is not is not is a misunderstanding.
China the China develop itself but it should be peacefully and together with countries all around the first step should be around china is like our neighbor so devoted together the activity with all those countries major on cultural exchange trading airline wrong way building's internet yeah the kind of activities so it's all the old original things like trade and so on but it's a lot of new things like e-commerce and telecommunications and so on yes yes and I just wanted to observe that for much of China's history china was very much reaching out to the whole world and very much the center of a global trading network and for some time then China turned inwards and was not so much engaged with the world so now in the past 40 years China has really started to look outward again and reassert itself as being a leader of the world across so many areas so this one belt one Road policy is part of a continuing evolution of China's reaching out and embracing the world would would you agree yes.
Right have you taken part in any of the activities that are part of this policy any cultural festivals or trade agreements or educational exchanges all committee we involve every year i think i think submit and every every year two months ahead of a sublet pack itself the house is any meeting to submit the proposals for APEC summit leaders for consideration and then to sign agreement in the apex of minutes but we as a big bad think-tank peg as I think time to provide proposals to AIPAC yeah oh other other kind of seminars protec already we involve a lot of project operations overseas and GCC America is a member of DC as well so parts probably America is an observer at these discussions about the one belt one Road one battle when role is the major job for pc and I think time for the other research ok we're bringing our friends from Beijing back on the screen here where our internet connection ah there we go so now we have a new guest this is lynn finding the chief executive officer of beijing moza international culture development company limited it's a very interesting media development and publishing group in Beijing.
And they understand very well the role of the one belt one Road and also of next to lead final in is Joe shelf on who is the is the president of asia-pacific group in China and she is hosting this broadcast on the China and and she'll be translating today didn't find it very good to meet you a little ankle strap on i will ask a question which was really carried over from the previous segment looking forward with the one belt one Road policy it's really just beginning it's only been actively pursued for three or four years but looking forward.
Where do we see this going let's say in 10 years assuming everything is successful.
What will be the extent of that road what countries will be involved what activities will be part of this one so what-what one Road policy thank you Michael now you can you unless you make sense and she didn't.
Now we don't care for the shooting you to find free something should be in general manager away engine into any chickens here for attention yeah well well together to the United nashville TN actually the alley be the biggest challenge that somebody on your daughter sounds you my son's la famille you will do that to shore back to sound habitats using two providers or a teacher love auntie told that you know that hunky gotta take that you don't shouldn't be sure that the quantity to sound like we hear one of 24 sonia and opposition was in there to work the wax and it holds back down back by you cancel your number will I was hunted down the table also told to cooperate implore and for the the one world one bailed.
It's actually a big project imagine a big project from china and there's involving a lot of business people lots of country which business is perfectly to you.
So this project could be in Africa for being react would be in Middle East that could be Canada America so this is where the using one roll one belt to to explain a whole country is a big project and so finally still short bullshit you can sure John border you it's like we need to re-establish our connection here again for a moment very sorry for the technical difficulties will be right back okay we're determined we're going to get down this one road we're going to get there and we're back now and i wanted to ask if you could give us a specific example five min of the activities taking place under this new policy get tell us our country and a project that you know of that successful that's part of the expression of this new policy by China.
Pete I cooking example talk with them shall we take a GT that is material door kinda will lead to additional at home want to the top of the actual of the watershed haha yeah what's wrong no ma politicians get into it as well wishes one of your drones in that good charity it's on that the ten-part to potentially either their totals you no matter you got those in there to go to know to shortage of the songs download shows yet which is why I want to chew maybe an assault on with my tongue out how much rally TV is too little war got all emotional song that you get home and it's all tests show that the leadership will come home late again tentative patient did you really put on the jobs family then coordinate not put on that you have you and the there's so many examples or when broken Bell and for mr. clean because he's working related is for the translation languages and starting from cultural exchange for instance their company working with Gloria total company and they have exchanged for language not only for chinese teaching Glorian about China and the cultural vice versa jaborian also teaching Chinese their language and their cultural and this is just one example for one world one fell of collaboration they're working together and from there and they develop maybe future on other many projects that's my understanding that the underlying principle behind this policy is one of mutual respect and equality between nations even the largest nations talking to the smallest nations there's still full respect and equality between them this is an idea that was developed in the early days of China's history as a young nation soon after independence by premier Joe and lie.
Perhaps funding you could comment a little bit on the philosophical background behind the one Road policy and angels only yeah that'd be cool and casual phone calls and says you're searching challenge for having sugar think that Josh to true that the engine console now fighting for da chi changeling community so we don't like the way that could be tapped your homie cultural seconds and friends in target i take her teacher and jackie schechter your friends only open maker because she's back and she invited to go launcher to ya.
Jula ocean how totally take that to the cavity that without falling into it about what kind of video about how they hear the organs are you should hate interesting telling well you talk about an actual send addition to do about have been single all wrong with our sugar ensure know what sister what to send their smiles like that you actually which is what we actually went along little one I heard about little more rock eagle and I doubted that later that you have other inmates years old 161 our little world will actually go ok we are close to the end of our program and will try to bring our friends from Beijing back again for a moment but like to reflect on the how the tides of history move from china and west and through to Europe and ultimately Europe through to America and how that stone kept skipping across the ocean to Hawaii and here we are at the farthest Western extent of civilization and talking back to the very beginning of that link in China it's interesting how we come to the we come to the close of a cycle of history with this one belt one Road policy and although it's initiated by China through all the other nations that it has alliances with America is a welcome partner in the big picture of of one belt one Road and we'll be exploring that theme with these organizations I want to sincerely thank you lee and then find land for being our guests today to very influential organizations in China representing hundreds and thousands of other organizations and people who are all working towards this common objective there are many aspects of this policy to explore and that'll be one of our themes as we develop the program understanding china so thanks to everyone for persevering through our technical difficulties here on this program and we look forward to to rejoining you again soon.
