Star show Rosie O'Donnell called into the show once now she's here live i'm excited about did you ever think this would happen I didn't like it I told you I started really dig and Rosie when she came out of the closet you don't mean I got I'm like such an honest broadcaster that I felt Rosie should not be in the closet in the closet in which came out of the closet it's just your world and whatever you want should be I saw him somehow related to I thought that she was very own i think is very brave to come out of the closet.
Especially when you have a huge mega career like she does let's face it is Rosie what we're what I was Gary sorry Rosita think she looks rosier promoting America which will premiere on this very night at nine o'clock on lifetime and I suggest you watch the TV show i really liked it.
Hey Rosie tall as I die I'm not bad studio you never saw a radio guy with his studio like that I've never seen a TV person with a studio like this nice to see you wrote the rover cam yeah five Robo cam and lots of people behind me you've got friend left you got already opened the bulletproof boot Robin is in a bulletproof I often say things that got me into trouble you don't want you know I Rosie because Robin when we first started working together we worked at a radio station where we were separated by glass that's the route was set up yeah and it became very comfortable she could work behind the glass and not interfere with what i was doing and I didn't interfere with what she was doing and we beat because you know like there's a very male atmosphere and faster own protection and that is what the dome of testosterone protect it wasn't so mail when we first started when I was it was sort of like a locker room and I rather than being a part of that I could just observe it and not interfere you don't like the smell of the locker room hey it's so beautiful something like a tollbooth thing you know you're the total bill collector protected or did you feel unsafe go sit with Rob dragon may do that i'll let you know it you just stop drinking your drink any alcohol now because i know we were thinking when I dinner but I don't think that's gonna be fun of your night drinking with that a problem well you know I didn't drink from about eight or nine years in my twenties and then neither really never occurred to me to drink.
Same with me and I i was sort of like I just worked that's all I did was work my whole focus was work I said why would someone waste time drinking ok so then um you know when I was 30 I started drinking like beer and clubs on and then you know what about 3-4 months ago my oldest son's about to turn 14 i said hey can you get me a beer because he wants to open you know the thing and he does know.
Wow I go with them i said why you guys I think you're drinking too much better lately i go since when he good at six months.
Oh I said wow I go I you know when I was 20 I didn't drink at all like knowing it he goes on.
You should try that again uh-huh you think you were drinking too much yeah why do you think you were drinking so much i think a little bit started during the video which is sort of like a joke but not really but I think it did like that you know i would that's when I i think i would notice there was an up kicking in the drinking I never understood you with your relationship with your TV shows like you did something really gets to you when you have a successful TV show that drives you crazy gonna sense only only only had one really well yeah okay so you left that show.
Yeah and then even with the view that I never thought would work out on the view because i don't see you playing with four other women I see you as the lead singer is we and there's too many you really didn't need them to function in other words they got in your way well you know it was somebody at you know Barbara asked me and I thought well okay let's try it for a year I stick my toe back in the same pool see if i want to go swimming and you don't see how it would work out and we all watched how it worked out.
Generally for fame was really super important to you and then when you suddenly said okay I'm come out of the closet which was a big big move for you because that had to be this what's scarier going up onstage doing stand-up the first time for coming out of the closet when you have all of America on your side hit television show sponsors up the wazoo and you don't even know what's gonna happen if you come out of the closet was scary the truth is Howard that i was already weiwei successful I had enough money but i was i was in the safe zone you know I didn't do it at a time when it was a threat to my career but when i was starting that show 96 nobody talked about being gay no Ellen was not out will and grace was not on the air that's right nobody would even ask me an interview that was something that the press sort of ignored and then you know in the last 10-15 years it's been a total change in and get awareness and the gay movement gay-rights everything and when I did come out it was because of the foster kid that I had that we weren't allowed to adopt right and I thought that was a good enough reason you know I didn't want to just have an announcement by the way I'm gay but when I took the job in 95 i told them that i would do it for five years and I would quit what's scarier going over well how old were you when you first went up on the stand up stage 16 16 straight from Long Island.
Yeah and what gave you the confidence to do that i did a show called Mac high schoolsouth the senior follies where you make fun of the teachers and one kid a year younger than me.
His older brother Richie Minervini on the eastside comedy club your doctor he came over to me and he said you should be a stand-up comic and I'm right now I wanna be an actress I want to be on Broadway you be with that good at getting up and making fun of the teachers.
Yeah but it's sort of saturday at Night Live skits right and i would do Roseannadanna and I would you know make fun of the teachers and do right I wrote the whole shell Wow and so you said hey maybe I could go up onstage and do stand-up comedy when they everyone said how great you were at this yeah where do you go to do that intervenes place i went to innovate display are you whether you walk up on the stage and you had what you review written material down no I saw a murder Griffin the day before and Jerry Seinfeld was on right and I'm remember this act.
Is that not only is acted as inflection everybody i was like you would be Jerry Seinfeld experience another minute walk that stage and I'm 16 like self-driving and on the car stalls blood not looking for a lot of my looking for a big on/off switch are all like is it i'm picking you know of course I killed and I don't know what stage and all the comics were in there Little Wolf Pack like they are they like when you get those jokes i said jerry seinfeld on Merv Griffin like you can't do that i'm like why not people don't admit it no I don't know you like this.
Try sitting right here song like that so great but the comics you know new probably that she got it from there they expected alive but no I don't know very honest.
Well I saw it I was like all those are funny i'll just say so people came down on you for using Jerry Seinfeld Zac then you said all I better go home and what right down and act you how to go create an act well i sat at the bar with them and they're like you know you have to just talk about your own life you can't just talk about somebody else's material and I was like well that's crap because strikes and I get all these analogies of music so that nice it will come back tomorrow and try yourself so I went back and they let me MC and i just learned from doing you know MC and and talking about my own sort of family life and you know when did you start to feel really famous after like you had that show on vh1 used to do the stand-up on vh1 for well did you start to feel like you were really getting famous that you were becoming a big star at that point or is it when you it was an 84 when I was discovered at the eastside comedy club by admin man's daughter who was in the audience and came over to me and said my dad's at mcmahon and I'm gonna put you on Star Search and I was like yeah right now still living at home with my dad you did Star Search yes the second year did you win no there's no we're here because your year one Jackie Martino but I've known Jackie since I'm 16 right but i'm a guy one named john kassir but the year that i was on it was me and Sinbad when the in the finals right one he and I both didn't win and this guy john kassir one but i made like 30 grand which to me was more money than I could imagine but I moved to LA right and i started doing stand-up at at the clubs there and going on the road and at the time I was like an opening act and after starting got to headline now headline where you know young a bonkers and in san antonio did you think you were gonna be big did you think you'd be a big star but not stand up i thought i would be a Broadway person I thought no kidding yeah like a like a funny sort of actress doing rolling South Pacific or something exactly like I you know the goal of course was always strikes in but knowing that i couldn't sing yeah I thought I would you know do some sort of you know Broadway Maureen Stapleton kind of career and now that you think about it what with all the things you don't maybe being a Broadway actually the most boring thing in the world because you have to do the same thing over and over and over again.
Actually it's been the most fun part of show business for me yeah she's done Broadway yeah yeah I know you've done it but yeah but you don't do it for long you kinda bailout after a while because you get bored I did grease for a year which believe me was very taxing but to do a Broadway show.
There's nothing like it in show business you know you do a movie and you're there for a month two months the longest time I ever did was legal their own which was three months and that's where you become friends with Madame yeah and you still friends with her.
Yeah that difficult for you know but it was at the beginning because I remember she was friendly with sandra when I was on vh1 is a VJ and I remember thinking to myself happy to be friends with her but with Sandra Bernhard yeah why well I remember Sanjay was friends with Madonna and I get thinking how could Sandra be friends with Madonna how do you connect the duck it was like Elvis it was right too big of a person but the day before I met her and I didn't know is going to meet her at the movie set I want to see through their right and I saw that she was at the grave of her mom and her mom's name which is her own name right and that's the same situation for me and so when I met her penny said to me you know tomorrow but dogs got command.

Whatwhat walks in and I said hey saw your movie yesterday my mom died when I was 10 and I have the same name and I totally related to it and we became sort of sisters at the moment McDonough's brother describes that even when she was she had a group of people over once I think you were included and you all played truth or dare kind of a game and Madonna would purposely asked questions where everyone would sort of kiss RS in the sense that she would say who who do you want to kiss most in the room and everyone knew that it would be Madonna everyone wanted to catch Madonna that she is so the focus she is so the star and you're a big star in your own right it doesn't get competitive between the two of you not at all and that's I don't think that Chris Christopher's the recollections are really accurate no I don't think they're accurate at all i don't really good.

Never she ever really never and can't believe it and you know what other people sort of have said that to me too which i always find shocking that people say oh you us cents on the dollar are you out of your mind I would Donna Devils she will go with women and men but she is a beautiful sexually actively healthy woman ng you know is a world icon and sex symbol and she can have sex with anyone she wants to she disappointed that you are not into Kabbalah i actually haven't talked about who you are.

Yeah and then all of a sudden everybody got all freaked out and took it away right.
Don't you have something and they take it away from you it's devastating well she gave me on my birthday our marriage certificate framed and it's in our house and the kids love it and you know and then when the annulment little letter came she was holding actually sent a letter.
Yeah what like in case you think you married or not gonna sit here and now he clearly knows you knows both are not matter who you like but while really did upset her and i was like listen you know honey it's not gonna happen overnight why do we always read I mean I don't know why he was really your marriage is in trouble your relationship with Kelly's in trouble why are we always hearing that is your and when you read inquiry stuff tabloid stuff and I know stuff's not true i read that i didn't read it either but I heard we say it yeah that your marriage is always in trouble that you're injured the border she's getting bored or something very much more well that's true with four kids we are bored because you aren't we do is play boggle and with anagrams but it isn't hard to keep any kind of romance going with Kelly if you in fact have four kids I mean it's almost impossible right it is but she's really she's the reason I think that we stay together she's the reason that we still you know have interested in each other and a lone time when she schedules time just for us to go away.
Date night kind of thing well yesterday night away from the house because date night with four kids and a house is not ever a date night if you didn't have that and you'll be in Rosie O'Donnell big star.

Check your opening premiere party attention there were people naked and clearly she was like her top with them but they were that to me was the most wild sexual thing that had ever happened to me did you feel compelled to get nude with other people then Howard I don't get no DS the lake right now trust your bad body kinds of you're overweight and you feel I don't want anyone to look at me i just i don't really identify myself as a sexual being which is a weird thing in my shrink works on it with me but I don't think of it and when someone is kind of flirting or kind of you know coming on to me i don't even really know what do you think that's why you hold onto your weight that it keeps you from being sexual against you from being it's definitely one of the reasons out that I relate the back completely though yeah what's with your way no yeah you want to take a shot yeah making yourself unattractive and what you sayin cuz im feeling secure than you don't want to you know I mean and then the way things like a way to go well look if you don't like being intimate look I want when I get thinner maybe we'll do is run away and I would sit it's weird yeah well once I did you know I went on died center which is gonna one of these men many many ridiculous things that you can try and I got down to you know like a size 12 or 11 like jeans tucked in with a belt was that when you did the Garry Marshall movie remember you got thin for that one where you have the domination all that it was right around there was actually a little thinner than that and I stopped to go to the improv at a gas station self-serve right and the guys nice looking guys came out to help me with the gas now that had never happened to me before my life and I remember like being overwhelmed and they was really kind where you going like oh fuck i'm going to the improv and I'll really let me do your windows for you I was like what the hell happened here was this more eyes are getting under and then I stopped at baskin-robbins on the way to the improv and without even really realizing it to later you know but you have a fear of matter how much anything that bad experience we could you were molested as a child yes yeah so so that would make sense in a way you don't want attention from men yes but i know many women who are sexually abused to or not gay right so I don't know that maybe the weight keeps but i don't know i can't figure this community are very disciplined person yeah you are.
I know if you want to be thin you could be fair I really do believe that yeah I think you're a very disciplined person so something's going on urine therapy.
Something's going on with the weight that you're holding on but you know what's interesting is that I have four very fit healthy kids and none of them from my gene pool that's number one but number two is that they're fit they have you know Celtic Kelly is what sort of in control of the food in the house and when they want to snack i always say ass mami Kelly I'm not in control of the food but my daughter who is now 11 and and beautiful and tall and skinny and she said to me once.
Mom do you know that you could look different and I was like well yes she goes you know you really could and it totally struck me you know i was like she's noticing it and and last week we were in Miami she's embarrassed I'm I think that probably it's not about you know because I'm famous you get a lot of leeway i think i was just the average mom perhaps you know but when we went to them to the beach in Miami recently which I don't like to do to go to the beach with them because all the paparazzi and the suit and possibly i don't know how you live in Miami but we never leave the house usually don't yeah but I went to the beach with them and my son was making a sandcastle my older son and I was going in the water with the other three and i had a t-shirt over my suit and I said park i'm gonna leave the t-shirt here okay because he was near the shore and he goes why i said well because I didn't want to walk from the blanket with my just my bathing suit and I'll leave it here and then when I get out I'll grab the t-shirt and he goes mom at one when are you gonna just accept your body that's how you are everyone knows that's how you are it's okay just go in the water these kids are brilliant but they really don't know I wish my kids returns to be something you have get yeah yeah and I feel like you know what an idiot that actually I should be teaching them to love but I don't you know i'm not there like you say it's really comfortable with her body totally but she's fit and thin and she plays tennis every day you should walk around the house newt I me know when the kids are there but I mean when she walked around the bedroom naked with the lights on the whole thing yes without thinking about it i like that yeah yeah yes you would and I always say to her sometimes I'm like oh honey why you like me I'm so fat and she's always like to do have we ever had one issue with me not being a traveling I know but honey I'm you could have such a gorgeous girl from gradually she's like please don't like how I perceive me is not how necessarily other people do you know sometimes thing too is it's like-- well i mean i understand the way especially know a little bit about what how you grew up.
Yeah i think i think there is a protectiveness there did you don't want that kind of sexual attention yeah really don't write and there are 50 Donald children and all of us are overweight really yes so you think that's right now extrapolate we did theory yeah i think well yeah i think they lost their mother when they were young I don't know I've had my own problems believing that I'm a trained three days isn't helping at all.

That's great i do think i'm a little more connected with my kids and able to empathize more I think that's a good relationship now you at that restaurant once but you know I think that when my son asked me to win about the drinking that what he was saying was you wanted me to be more present them to connect more.
Yes that's what he was saying you know and and so was it hard to give up the beer no no not really I mean you know truthfully I i would I don't have one if I'm at home at night and I'm gonna have a beer i have four and it affects the weight tremendously and you have depression issues it's totally the worst thing to do so it was educate you said you would you take medication for depression i do you do what do you take effexor effexor who are you when you're not on how well what are you already my god i realized i was not as a bride brings more.
Years ago I had issues and paxil helped me out a lot huh uh but i haven't been on an antidepressant while lately i'm thinking about going on one and i haven't been the last time I think max was probably a decade ago so I know they made a lot of advancements yeah but I remember that they said the worst thing to do and that President drink around any level you know yeah you gotta make a decision either way right I I don't affect should work for you it has worked for me and said it's a low dose and then and it also helps with hot flashes which I don't think I'm not yet oh yes honey how is this affecting you oh dear Lord and I don't think women ever talk about her re-election don't ask my a lots of practice no way to guess I'd like to call good six before our baby right now you're wanting other shoes running oh god I'm so much older than me and she's way older okay well my started 41 night at my show was over when I was 40 so I'm ended 41 and I wake up and and the baby now it's like to Vivian I go out God she must defeat in the bed the bed so and I look around there's no baby there's just me my bed was wet.
Oh my god drenched like you know I think I'm going through menopause lady trip going to judge went on you remember Albert Brooks and and broadcast knows that's what it was like sweat everywhere everywhere and it lasted like probably three years and it was unbelievable some nights I would sleep with zip lock bags full of ice on my neck my head how does this affect your sexual you weren't a very sexual person and I've even set the rod Robin started using KY actually had not the same year we were lying now that I was lying.
Don't use KY know its metabolic level like goes a long way for anyone is my opinion you will you show you what I'm just saying that if if you if you're in the mood it sometimes it's helpful no kidding yeah listen I don't even know what you and Kelly you're doing but you need KY probably pretty similar to what you're doing is coming just can't get upset when you need k why does she feel that she's less of a woman that she is not turning well with two women.

You walked off the view that just was too much headache yeah you tried the variety show thing but we don't why mess with your success in other words you're why even do a variety show you have to unlock shop you know I had some meetings when I was in LA to do promote this movie that I'm last week I was in LA and right you know the reason that I left was because at some point i was really bored of talking to celebrities right and I didn't want to interview somebody who did the same exact story the night before on letterman that I watched and it couldn't be authentic or real for me and it became less and less from exactly and so by the time i had the guy from the soap operator watch for the tenth time because we hadn't you know it just I felt like I had done it and so now if i were to go back I would want to do it with real people I would want to do it with actual stories that are of interest not all heavy and not all you know but just to have fun and maybe the occasional celebrity of that kind of talking about something other than what they are there to promote maybe it's the medium maybe because you you are so successful you do network television network television doesn't really allow you a lot of leeway that there was a point in my career where they came to me ABC and they said we want to make you like sort of the Barbara Walters before the Academy Awards you'll interview for celebrities that I said about what are the standards for how am I gonna be able to really ask anybody a real question I don't think it was me so maybe you were thinking for a while going on MSNBC and doing what we were actually like five seconds away think that would've been good because you could have done politics and.
A lot of shit but you know rachel maddow actually took that job and she's fantastic added changes you have you seen it i have a much better now she's really good.
Let me talk to you about this special that you're promoting because first of all so i got a copy of it they said you gotta watch before Rosie comes out and for some reason I felt like that was a homework assignment like oo leave me i remember on my show used to hate when people said that I had I would be hard to watch it watch it the best what would be your big enough stories that ok I gotta watch as they said that we gotta watch Rosie show I thought it was gonna be some documentary or something I know whatever thing for and even reminded me i like your last show so I should watch it so i went home with Beth the Gary went home and he watched it actually an a-plus great show.
This is a story Rosie plays a social worker the kid who is the black kid who have gone through the foster system right you've met him in a diner and put him.
That's pretty bold you're you're producing a show for lifetime yeah and you meet this kid in the diner you just say you're a good-looking kid maybe you'll be the you'll be the star of this thing.
Well we had read a hundred kids for the part we had three weeks of pre-production we got to do the movie because we piggybacked on another lifetime we use their crew and detroit had unbelievable tax incentives for movies so it was a once-in-a-lifetime shot and it was right when I was supposed to be preparing for the variety show part but i thought i could sneak in and do Bo and we went to this diner three days before photography there was this kid and I watched how he was eating he was very intelligent and stoic and I said to the other producers see that kid that's the kind of kid that should do it he's like what are you gonna walk over and you know just introduce yourself and I waited until one of the people at the table looked over and said are you Roseanne Barr which is enough let me introduce my travels have a good job that's yeah but I said to him which every day and have any interesting he said now was an engineering student and he was about to you know go to college and finals and he was totally disinterested and I said well this is the number and we're filming the last two kids on friday and then we're going to put the movie in turn around now do it because we want to continue acting those you have a bug.
