2/13/17 | Flynn Future - White House: Pres Trump Evaluating The Situatio...

##########################################
This is the Fox News Alert I'm Red Bear there is uncertainty tonight in Washington over the future of at least one senior Trump administration official we're coming to you from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in simi valley california will show you around this amazing facility throughout this special report on the road it took several months before the first senior official left the Reagan administration it has only been 24 days in the president Trump's term and he is dealing with his first major personnel issue the White House press secretary write a statement moments ago saying President Trump is evaluating the situation regarding national security adviser michael Flynn national security correspondent jennifer griffin has the latest on this breaking story from the Pentagon tonight being Jennifer good evening bread it's not uncommon for president to express full confidence in aid right before they are shown the door in response to questions in the hallway leading from the Oval Office to the colonnade president Trump was asked whether rights previous was doing a good job he said not a good job a great job when asked about national security advisor my cleanse the president said we're putting out a statement White House press secretary Sean Spicer speaking to reporters just moments ago evaluating the situation vice-presidents and vice-presidents relative to the conversation Vice President had with general flange and offers making various other people about what he considers the single most important subjects there is our national security team will be a number of competing camps inside the white house tonight as president Trump besides the way ahead for his national security advisor my cleanse.
A senior west wing source tells FOX News national security adviser Mike Flynn met with vice president Mike Pence this morning and apologized for telling him that sanctions were not discussed in a phone call with the Russian ambassador in december that coincided with the explosion of 35 Russian five and the imposition of sanctions in the wake of Russia's interference with the u.s. election the backtracking followed revelations that there may be transcripts of FB i intercepted phone calls.
According to this White House official the vice president accepted plant pathology the White House press corps did not ask about when status at today's press conference with the Canadian Prime Minister his first press availability since news reports surface this one could be fired.
There was little public support from White House officials this weekend fueling the notion that Flint job could be on the line.
That's the question but I think you should ask the president general plan is served his country admirably is a three-star general he's headed the Defense Intelligence Agency and i look forward to having more discussions about this in the future plan was supposed to be the keynote speaker tonight a special operations banquet.
He cancelled his appearance on Sunday when was with the president all weekend at mar-a-lago overseeing the visit of the Japanese Prime Minister and the response to North Korea many House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi called Flynn's removal quote this administration has exhausted its excuses Vladimir Putin's grip on president Trump must be investigated exposed and broken national security demands that general Flynn be fired immediately the President had a two-hour meeting with Flynn this morning and which I'm told he turned to Flynn and asked his advice on various national security issues this West Wing official told me the President and vice-president were not happy but he is not going to be gone by the end of the week.
Kellyanne Conway said this afternoon that slang quote has the full confidence of President Trump the decision will ultimately come down to one person Brett president Trump.
Exactly jennifer griffin lot of the Pentagon Jennifer thank you let's get more on this first what some are calling a major personnel crisis for the Trump administration and what it could mean for this president going forward syndicated columns charles krauthammer joins me now from Washington Charles your thoughts is this is developing late this afternoon what strikes me is helping the whole story is this is a cover-up without a crime the idea that one should be all gasp because the incoming national security adviser spoke with the Russian advisor and spoke about sanctions seems to me to be perfectly reasonable the idea that it was illegal is preposterous when I hear Nancy Pelosi get all upset about this and how in the grip of the Russians that shows us to be this is an absurdity but then you ask yourself within why did he lie about it even internally internalized president and that shows a tremendous lapse of judgment and a total lack of trustworthiness so the president is faced with a very difficult problem if he fires them then it puts in question the president's own judgment choosing him in the first place having to fire him in within three weeks on the other hand this is a guy who has been advising them stuck with them has appeared to have done the right thing and talking with the Russian ambassador and done a crazy thing and lying about it depends and he's got to decide how it's going to look either way it's gonna be he's going to be hurt but if he is going to get rid of him he better have somebody of stature waiting in the wings you know there are all kinds of stories all kinds of sources anonymous of course telling all kinds of people that he's toast by the end of the week there's there are people saying that General Petraeus is being considered to take the National Security Advisor none of this confirmed of course Charles and the person who have to make the decision about this close confidant is president Trump and I think that's the reason that is the fate of weight is hanging in the balance.
I'm not sure the truck knows his own mind even now I'm sure that is those are the silence over the weekend was a result of the fact i don't think that was a great strategic decision keep people hanging and all this I think he simply didn't know which way to go because he loses either way one way it makes him look bad choice the other way he leaves the Pens hanging and disrespected if he sticks with the slip so he knows it's a tough choice you know just going to lose one way or the other and I think the reason we're waiting for a decision is that it is entirely up to the President and i'm not sure the President himself has decided yeah one last thing quickly you know we're here at the Reagan Library and there's this picture of you with President Reagan want to put it up there because we happen to be here he obviously had some personnel decisions to make in his time as well yeah glad you're alright much bigger I'm not gonna find something interesting to say and boy do i do I look young back then i will try to desiccate what's happening.
Charles thank you as always an interesting day of news president Trump has apparently chosen a course of action following his court set back on his immigration travel ban it came on a day when the president was able to deal with one border situation that is relatively calm chief White House correspondent John Roberts has the specific even jump directly to you the Department of Justice today said that it would file a brief with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals after one judge on the court last week said that the entire court should vote on whether to rehear the case that the president lost on thursday night at last week when a three-judge panel ruled against his extreme betting order Department of Justice also asked the Seattle district judge to put on hold any hearings there on the constitutionality of the extreme batting order until the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decides what it's going to do the ninth circuit may hear that case again with a larger panel of judges numbering about 11 it is meetings with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today immigration was very much on president Trump's front-page their policy on refugees could not be more different.
Last year candidate took in nearly forty thousand refugees from Syria President Trump wants to ban Syrian refugees indefinitely until a new system of extreme betting is put in place we want people to come in and come in our country but we cannot let the wrong people in and I will not allow that to happen during this administration canada has always understood that keeping Canadian safe is one of the fundamental responsibilities of any government and that certainly is something that we're very much focused on at the same time we continue to pursue our policies of of openness towards immigration refugees without compromising security the united states and canada share the longest undefended border in the world there have been examples where people who would commit acts of terror in the united states have come across that border today President Trump was asked he believes the northern frontier is secure never be totally confident that can through the incredible efforts already i see it happening of formerly Jen.
All Kelly now secretary Kelly we have really done a great job where were actually taking people that are criminals very very hardened criminals in some cases with the witch with a tremendous track record of of abuse and problems and we're getting them out and that's what i said i would do the Department of Justice is this week working on a new executive order to reinstate the president's immigration band it is expected to contain very specific language exempting legal permanent residents as well as certain current visa holders the White House fully and forcefully expect any new order will easily pass legal muster and unlike the rollout of the original executive order which even the Speaker of the House Paul Ryan said was confusing the white house plans if and when it releases a new executive order to have a full plan ready to go to completely informed people as to what it does what it's all about and when it will be implemented right John Roberts love in the North Lawn John thank-you present jobs first few weeks have been nothing if not contentious a lot of the resistance is actually coming from within his own government at times tonight chief Washington correspondent james rosen tells us why and perhaps with the president can do about it most federal workers are good people of varying competence who execute their duties faithfully but some bureaucrats Fox News has reported are using encryption apps and leaks to try to derail president Trump's policies already we've seen leak transcripts from his calls with heads of state and leaked draft language from his executive order certainly we've seen a greater tsunami of weeks at a very early ER stage then we necessarily would have seen and other administration as he surveys the world from The Oval Office the new president might well imagine himself surrounded by saboteurs so how can we combat this determined enemy from within some allies on Capitol Hill alarmed by the tempo and sensitivity of the early leaking want to see criminal prosecutions it's possible Republican congressman Kevin younas chairman of the House Intelligence Committee we're going to identify all of the leaks that have occurred over the last 60 days and we're gonna let the FBI know that we want to have an assessment on this as documented in Nixon's back-channel to Moscow a new study by historian richard mosse of the US Naval War College the 37th president and his national security advisor Henry Kissinger often circumvented the bureaucracy through secrecy I'm not sure that it's possible validates the national security staff that Kissinger had at his disposal is approximately 40 people strong current national security council is over 400 people president Trump could drive speed implement his policies quickly before bureaucrats can subvert them but the pitfalls of rushing reforms have already been made planes by his experience with the executive order on immigration they rushed it out rusted out very quickly even they recognize the problems in implementing this and it created more trouble than dealing with the problem that he was facing false flag operations offer another option.
WikiLeaks revealed that when Hillary Clinton's campaign.
Manager suspected internal leak he asked a false rumor he planted among the staff about when Clinton was announced her candidacy to see if it would leak and the leaker could be identified a tactic that President electrons seemed already aware of they said i will tell anybody have a meeting and I won't tell anybody about my meeting with intelligence nobody knew not even Rona my executive assistant for years she didn't know i didn't tell the meeting was had the meeting was over they left and immediately the word got out that a meeting.
Sources say the White House is aware of its problem with leakers and reviewing ways to combat it and the president and his advisors are also mindful of the need to take action that does not itself straight over the line into illegality James thank you.
We are awaiting confirmation vote in the Senate for two more president Trump's cabinet nominees and while we wait Democrats are doing their best to score more points by questioning the president's truthfulness congressional correspondent Mike Emmanuel is on capitol hill tonight to tell us where things stand right now after Republican complaints of Democrats obstruction on cabinet nominees tonight the Senate is expected to confirm Stephen Lucien for treasury secretary and David shokan for Veterans Affairs Secretary has been really does important historic level of instruction about some Democrats in the Senate Democratic leader took the opportunity to take this swype president Trump and his team turns out president Trump was using populist rhetoric to cover up a hard right agenda which will be carried out by this bevy of billionaires and bankers and hard right ideologues broken promise after broken promise Democratic resistance took on a new form yesterday with Minnesota senator al franken of loading that some of his Republican colleagues have concerns about president Trump's mental health in the way we all have this suspicion that.
You know that is not he lives a lot he says things that aren't true then there was an unusual a purse from Republican Senate Judiciary Chairman chuck Grassley sunday on Twitter for example whoever monitors twitter at White House tell President Trump to ask Putin what do you have against election opponents because they are killed in prison poisoned Grassley going to thinking on Fox today we shouldn't we in our conversation too important just kind of say what what do you have against some opposition what do you have against the election President struck a nerve with it easy easy please please so much of my work better than these are after the 2016 election some lawmakers are getting an earful from activists and constituents a town hall I tried to explain to them there were many Americans who were just as upset that the rock Obama was elected president but they didn't write in the street beyond the election hangover what would make life easier for some of those house republicans would be a defined healthcare replacement plan it would take away some of the uncertainty and give them something to sell during those town hall meetings.
Emmanuel live on the hill Mike thank you one of President from senior advisors is trying to bolster the case that massive voter fraud was committed in November election in your course by Eric sean has been following this issue for us for months he has our report tonight from New York senior White House policy advisor steven miller offered no evidence to back up his voter fraud claim that people are illegally busting New Hampshire from the neighboring state of Massachusetts do you have that evidence I've actually having worked before on a campaign in New Hampshire i can tell you this issue of busting voters ingenue Hampshire is widely known by anyone is working Hampshire politics it's very real.
It's very serious punch news could find not one case like new hampshire prosecutors of voter fraud by but state election officials say both fraud cases are isolated and sporadic before being investigated now do not involve a bus political insiders have long thought that some out-of-state presidential campaign workers vote in New Hampshire because all they have to do is declare a domicile the state law says in part quote and inhabitants domicile for voting purposes is that one place or a person more than any other place has established a physical presence democratic state attorney general joseph foster insist it does not happen in the thousands saying quote simply put the allegations by President Trump are baseless we know of no widespread voter fraud nor has any been brought to our attention.
It is simply untrue the state also has a photo ID law if voters do not have a photo ID election officials take their picture with a Polaroid camera the voters fill out an affidavit and the information is followed up to verify the voters identities there is no one case of a man who drove from carver Massachusetts to Manchester New Hampshire to vote illegally but he drove his own car.
No bus involved Lauren Snyder guilty to illegally voting in the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections a former new hampshire state Republican chairman Fergus colin is offering $1,000 to anyone who can prove a Massachusetts resident took a bus to estate to vote illegally.
Mr. Collins says no one is so far called to collect and costs even Miller's claim quote ridiculous and complete garbage Brett there Sean in New York Eric thank you.
This is another Fox News Alert president Trump is taking action against venezuela is vice-president tonight minutes ago the administration announced the US will sanction the official the u.s. is accusing of being a drug kingpin course I Richardson has the story lost in the State Department tonight even rich a good evening read in that extraordinary announcement the sanctioning of a country's vice president comes after Treasury officials say was a multi-year investigation of that person and now because of those sanctions Americans are prevented from conducting business with the vice president of Venezuela Tarek el Asami Treasury also says it could freeze his assets in a statement the department says quote he facilitated shipments of narcotics from Venezuela to include control over planes that lead from the Venezuelan air base as well as control of drug routes through the port in Venezuela the administration also says he oversaw narcotics shipments from Venezuela ball to multiple locations including Mexico and the United States relations between the u.s. and the regime invent as well have been a really adversarial point for many years now in this announcement like that likely makes that much worse Senator Bob Menendez in congressman eliot loss ros-lehtinen had led an effort to push the Trump administration to move forward on sanctions and punish the Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro in a statement the right quote we welcome these sanctions because they signal a fundamental step in charting a positive role the United States can continue to play given the deteriorating crisis in Venezuela with democracy under total season Venezuela and without any due process or rule of law left we can and must do more to hold the dural regime accountable then as well as basically been an economic freefall the collapse of oil prices.
Richard's in love at the State Department an Irish thank you as the Syrian government conducted at least eight chemical weapons attacks using chlorine gas during the final months in a battle for lepo Human Rights Watch says its report is based on witness interviews and video footage says government helicopters carried out the attacks in rebel-held Eastern Aleppo reports nine civilians were killed including four children and 200 injured the government has previously did not using chemical weapons federal government in the u.s. took in more than a trillion dollars in revenue in the first four months of the fiscal year that is a record enough about a half a percentage point from the previous year taking in the most of your money but the government is also spending the most spent one and a quarter trillion dollars an increase of two tenths of a percentage point from a year earlier the US government reports 51 billion dollar budget surplus for january and that is smaller than last year's record highs though all around today on Wall Street the Dow gained 143 S&P 500 finished ahead 12.
The Nasdaq was up 30 as we told you earlier we are coming to you from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in simi valley california what about 425 miles north of here there's a very hazardous situation involving the nation's tallest damn nearly 200,000 people who live in the shadow of the oral dam had to leave their homes last night as part of a spillway showed dangerous sons version of course not included account is live right now at the top of that damn even close good evening Brett well the situation here in oroville is fluid we understand that the water level here in this reservoir is dropping it's about six feet now below the rim so that is good news dropping about four inches every hour and that emergency spillway that was teetering on collapsed yesterday is holding the problem is officials need to get this lake level lower they need to do it fast engineers are focusing on repairing or build an emergency spillway which suffered severe erosion damage over the weekend convoys of trucks delivered boulders that were used to fill dozens of super sacks the plan is for black helicopters to lower the sax into the damaged areas and shore up what is essentially a huge ravine that had never been used before this weekend there was no choice.
The reservoir is considered full at 901 feet as of eleven a.m. saturday morning the water was six inches over that limit and started to pour over the emergency spillway by three a.m. sunday the reservoirs surface crested at over 900 two feet six hours later lake levels are dropping and are continuing to drop tonight you need to fall it's also important point and our of Justice is to lower the lake level by 50 feet in order to prepare for future in flow of water more than 180,000 people were ordered to evacuate parking traffic jams and concern among residents multiple axes with the injuries on the freeway coming over from oroville we were pulling a trailer with all these two hours every one thanking everybody discuss remember that we're okay at the moment that he calms evacuees and engineers are focused on the weather as more rain is in the forecast for later this week and those mandatory evacuation orders remain in effect.
Breakfast is certainly going to be one of the biggest fix-it jobs is part of northern california has never seen as well as one of the most expensive more than 200 million dollars just to make repairs on the main still way here at the oral dam and perhaps you can see the spray coming off as outwater pounds against some of the damage concrete you to erosions earlier last week because of all the storms we've had and 30 also a chance that that's still way will have to be replaced all together can be very expensive.
Quality Kalin live on top of the oral dam but thank you.
A federal judge in Washington has denied a request by to Native American tribes to halt construction of the final segment of the Dakota access pipeline lawyers for the Standing Rock and Cheyenne River Sioux claimed drilling under Lake threatens clean water they say is essential to their practice of their religion last week construction on the pipeline resumed after the builders received approval from the army prosecutors in Puerto Rico have smashed a ring of current and former TSA workers that allegedly smuggled 20 tons of cocaine into the u.s. during an 18-year conspiracy the cocaine was worth as much as 100 million dollars on the street the Congressional source tells FOX News the charges point to the dangers of inside threats since the suspects could've smuggled explosives instead of drugs the next step in the immigration dispute between the courts and president Trump's and what to do about the National Security Advisor we will talk about all the latest with the panel and as we go to break a look rather large and important plane on the ground here at the library side.
Obviously the biggest exhibit here the reagan presidential library is this Air Force One the 707 President Reagan used it was actually used like seven president he traveled to 26 countries in this very plain and you can pretend that you are president and mrs. Reagan getting aboard this plane get your picture taken and then you walk on board and you can see President Reagan stateroom with the legal pad and the writings he did there it's a small plane that's 707 nothing like the 747 that they have now as you walk down the aisle you can see the meeting room with all the technology including the VHS machine special report continues after this.
[Music].
And when does enjoy the full confidence in the president vice-president what he talked about your relationship with the national security advisors let me enlighten you.
Evaluating the situation became the vice president vice-president pants relative to the conversation Vice President had with general flange and also speaking of various other people about what he considers the single most important subject there is our national security well this is the personnel issue that's being dealt with in washington now and hear different things from the administration officials Kellyanne Conway saying national security advisor john michael Flynn has the full confidence of President Trump but the statement late this afternoon about the National Security Advisor suggest that they're going to look into it and just you heard Sean Spicer to say that but just moments ago at the pool asked president Trump what are you going to do with general Flynn and he said we just put out a statement get it from ryans and the reporter says he's going to stay with you stand by and support him and he's the president response we just put out a statement so not getting pretty much any more details on that back-and-forth with that let's bring in our panel from Washington Charles hurt opinion editor for The Washington Times our lives and national political correspondent national public radio and Tom Rogan Thomas for national review and opportunity lives tomorrow your thoughts on what we're hearing and reading between the lines in some of these statements i was at the White House today and it was pretty chaotic and you know for 12pm Kellyanne Conway says Slim has full confidence 5 12pm Donald Trump walk past the scrum of reporters outside Sean spices office to say that there's this statement and that he's evaluating well that doesn't sound like he has full confidence so I think the bottom line is nobody speaks for Donald Trump we've gotta wait to hear what the president decides himself.
Sounds like slim fate is still up in the air.
So just to explain everybody Charlie where this comes from and this is a phone call between gentleman and Russian official the and talking about possible sanctions a conversation that he did not tell vice-president pen to them said they didn't talk about sanctions well specifically indicated that they had not discussed that with pens and as usual you know here in Washington is it is often the case it's not the original action that is the problem it is as you point out the way people respond to it after the fact you know the the thing that he possibly violated the logan act is a very obscure thing that it would be very hard to sort of prosecuting a case against general spin on that but the idea that he would then send vice-president pence out to basically live for.
That's a real problem especially for a guy like a vice president who has put so much of his credibility on the line to you know to assure so many conservatives so many Republicans on Capitol Hill who were all that sure about Donald Trump early on they they trusted him because of pens and so so that kind of treatment depends by that's a real problem tom this wednesday ago I think he's gonna go I think what you're seeing here in contradiction and statement is a reflection of the fact that President Trump is backing away probably so that Mike's linfield the best to resign i mean those statements in the sort of ambiguity are to me an absence of support and I think the secondary reason why a general claim is probably going to go is that the fury behind the scenes in the intelligence community about as Charles stairs the lie essentially after the original statement on the nature of the phone call is such that in the context of the president's relationship with Russia they want blood tomorrow i want to turn now to the talk about immigration and the president meeting with the Canadian Prime Minister today talking about the immigration order tickets we will have a big beautiful open door and we want two people and we're getting such praise for our stance and it's a stance of common sense maybe a certain toughness but it's really more than toughness there have been times where we have different in our approaches and that's always been done four million respectfully the last thing canadians expect is for me to come down and lecture another country on how they choose to govern themselves alright tomorrow your thoughts on those statements number one number two yeah definitely different number two what happens next with this executive order.
Well first of all they have a big decision to make they can we try to rewrite the executive order to make it unobjectionable to the courts or they can pursue the court challenge all the way to the Supreme Court see how far they can get but I think you saw just there is canada has made it pretty clear it's going to take refugees you can't go to America come to canada where the open welcoming inclusive country but prime minister to those very diplomatic and he's not going to come down here and make a protest in the White House but i do think that the the immigration order is kind of TVD they have a couple of choices to make over the weekend president Trump suggested maybe it would be rewritten and we're waiting to see if they actually do that you know that one of the things that I was struck by with that joint press conference between the president and the Prime Minister the Prime Minister was asked about you a few months back or a few weeks back he kind of tweaked president from by sending out that picture of him holding a refugee from Syria a clear sort of kind of needling of problem and this order to to restrict the the refugee traveled to the country when he was asked about that he responded with a decidedly different toad he very much picked up trumps tone of talking about national security and the importance of national security to him and the importance of keeping canada safe from the second the same things that Donald Trump has been talking about that sort of an interesting change of tone obviously they are two very different politicians but i think that Prime Minister Trudeau does understand that you know that this this is the terror threat is gnosis no laughing matter now.
Next up with the panel just how far will no Surya push the new American president and as we go to break a look inside a replica of the president's Oval Office in the regular library is an exact replica of the Oval Office what it looked like for President Reagan its measurements of the same the rug is the same all the decorations of the same in fact the rug here is now being used in president Trump's Oval Office and so is this death.
This is a replica of the death of 50 / office today the resolute desk and on the side of a sign it can be done ever the optimist Rosen Reagan and special report continues after this obviously North Korea is a big big problem and we will deal with that very strongly this president is committed to a fundamental rebuilding of the armed forces of the United States that will again send a signal to the world that America strength will not be tested North Korea one of the biggest tests on foreign policy for president Trump early in his administration we're back with our panel tom after this ballistic missile firing the longest distance that North Korea has managed tested missile your sense of the level of concern in the foreign policy community and what the world is doing about it I think one of the reasons I think it's lightning is because of the sense of distraction with Russia with Iran and North Koreans traditionally thought to take advantage for those distraction elements to push themselves back onto the radar but i think the broader point here is the synergy between North Korea ballistic missile development and Iran's ballistic missile development because in both cases they undetected I they return they disrupt sorry the fundamental nature of what has been the balance of power politics of the United States and those two parts of the world which is the idea that nuclear-capable nations will not be able to project that power or to have a black male capability to project that power and now in both senses it is degraded the Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson reacted to this test and and here's what he said the Chinese side opposes launched by the DPRK which violates the Security Council resolution than the current situation all relevant sides should refrain from doing anything that could provoke each other and escalate tensions on the peninsula and keep restrained jointly maintain peace and stability in the region are very diplomatic answer there tomorrow but everyone points to the Chinese they don't want some major attack in North Korea either because of the exodus of of North Korean refugees that flood into China so how do you use or leverage china into action.
Well that's a really good question and Donald Trump talked a lot about this during the campaign he wanted China to take care of the North Korean problem and what I think it's really interesting if there's a pattern at all in Donald Trump's foreign policy it's on a bunch of things Iran is real China he seems to be coming back to the norm to the mainstream policies on Iran he just put unilateral sanctions on pretty much what about the Obama administration has done on Israel all of a sudden maybe settlements are not such a great idea and then on China after he said he'd only agreed to the one-china policy if he got something from china on trade all of a sudden he's reaffirming it so it sounds like he's understanding it's a little more difficult than just demanding the China take care of the North Korean problem you know ASAP we often hear Charlie at the beginning of administration North Korea saber rattles and they get the attention of the world and then they get some deal where they they get money or food yeah it seems like this is different go yeah well one big difference is that we've had eight years of a president who's very much sort of giving away the store in terms of foreign policy in dealing with places like Iran and so it stands to reason that that North Korea would want to try to do something like this at a time like this not only because they can get away with a lot of stuff but also because they do want to test.
Donald Trump in infancy years of his presidency and it's probably a a good reason that we should be thankful that that General Jim Madison somebody at the Pentagon who is a very strategic thinker is very long term thinker he believes in sort of our big well-researched and well you know smart strategy for dealing with things like this and I think that that will you listening to people like general mattis will serve president from very well.
You have the new United Nations ambassador nikki Haley former governor of south carolina saying we call on all members of the Security Council to use every available resource to make it clear to the North Korean regime and its enablers that these launches are unacceptable it is time to hold North Korea accountable now with our words but with our actions Thomas is there any hope that there will be action by the UN that somehow persuades 432 act differently.
No I don't think i'm in my opinion is that the UN stand out a bit of a joke really when it comes to this kind of thing but the u.s. don't have capabilities to bring to bear i think one example here might be with partners Robbie visiting over the weekend potential beige ages cruisers on the part of the u.s. Navy in the Japanese Defense Forces but which are designed to intercept ballistic missiles and that could be the potential for a near-term deployment i SPECT general mattis will suggest that has suggested that to the president and the Secretary point very quickly i think is that the North Korean the advantage you have the North Koreans which to some degree you don't have for example with Isis is that the North Korean regime is not invested in theology or the theology of self at it but they can be deterred through the potential of their own annihilation and they receive that threat from the United States mr just finally going back to our first story when you have this uncertainty at least about the future of the National Security Advisor the foreign policy hotspots don't stop they keep coming and that trust in that person that national security advisor is pretty key and expressions early time I think it's really can also as we know foreign policy and national security is something that the president has almost all to himself so he's in charge of this Congress is not going to rescue him or take over his duties so it is really important that you have a kind of stable National Security Council structure and you have a national security adviser to not under a cloud.
Our time I know where you are martyrs when they're go away right now looks like he's going to have a tough time saying Charlie look at the trajectory of just today it looks like it's going to be pretty tough sledding for mistakes are you the guy who makes the decision hasn't decided yet panel thank you for Washington some final thoughts from the Reagan Library and Museum after a quick break.
